Call me biased, but I genuinely think one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give someone is something delicious. Over the holidays, I wrote about edible (and drinkable) host gifts, shared a few thoughts on comforting fridge staples for when guests pop by, and this one too—because having something good on hand just feels right.
I really believe the best memories are made at the table. Food brings us together like nothing else. After Covid, we all realized just how meaningful those small gatherings—just a bite and a drink with friends—really are. We also learned how to celebrate in quieter, more meaningful ways. Edible gifts hit that sweet spot: they delight the senses, they feel personal, and honestly? They make me smile. (Ask any guy I’ve dated who’s ever nailed the restaurant res for me—pure glee.)
So, for Mother’s Day, I pulled together some of my favorite recipes from over the years—many of them Mom-approved. If you’ve caught Joanna making a cameo on my Instagram or know her IRL, then you know: she not only has the best taste, hands down. She’s also the most generous and supportive mom (she’s ironed more napkins than I can count, fetched fish from the wholesale market, and run endless errands—all as my silent, unpaid PA for Muniak Studio).
But if you ask her what she really wants for Mother’s Day? It’s simple: a slow morning with us kids, coffee in hand, and a scone or a tea cake to share. Nothing fancy, just something made with love.
Even if you’re not a mom, or are grieving your mom in the many ways we can grieve our family. I know these Hallmark holidays can strike a nerve for many of us. There was a time when Mother’s Day reminded me that I wasn’t married with kids, and honestly, it was hard—and sad—some years. I encourage you to make a plan with a girlfriend, join your best friend for her celebration, and cook. Cook because it’s cathartic.

These three recipes—Mixed Berry Crumble with Polenta, Citrus Pistachio Loaf, and Rhubarb Frangipane Tart—are more than just delicious treats; they make for the perfect edible gifts. Package the tart in a box with a bow or arrive with it teetering on a cake stand and a bottle of wine in hand.
